6.8.13 TEAR OUT THE HEART "Coffin Eyes" Live Music Video
But Mashable.com has chosen my latest work: CeCe and Kyle Jordan Mueller 's cover of Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" as one of their YouTube Cover Songs of the week.
And all this in just 3 days of being released!
So anyway, they are voting for the best version of the song on the world wide internets and I need YOU to go vote:
Put one in for CeCe and KJM and vote as many times as you want! (you can do it multiple times, or atleast once a day).
Also, Kyle is so passionate about this contest (and so amped to release a new video) that he made a special request for all his fans... notice I didn't direct this... where was my call Kyle?
I promise, I'm not secretly behind the release of the new Kyle Jordan Mueller swag shop in order to further generate more cash flow for myself off of the success of our drum cover videos.
Actually, Kyle's popularity has begun to spread worldwide with fans writing him and imitating him from Brazil to Spain to Latvia. Seriously, this dude told me just today that he has kids on Facebook that are using his photo as their default pic! I shit you not.
So naturally, it has come time to release an online shop of KJM merchandise. And right off the bat, you can purchase (for only $20) his red "#KJM" shirt from "Love On Top," the iconic "Sorry I'm Not Sorry" from the mega successful "Super Bass" vid and the black "Come At Me Bro" top from "Hold It Against Me." Also for sale are autographed drumsticks and drum heads, not to mention - all shirts come autographed as well.
Had my second weekend in a row of absolute craziness.
Last weekend, I tackled two days of filming Tear Out The Heart's music video for "Come At Me, Bro!," Releasing OPTION//CONTROL's "Falling Star" music video, as well as completing editing and releasing Kyle Jordan Mueller's cover of "Love on Top" (All of which you can read about below). This weekend was much of the same with a two day shoot for up and rising singer CeCe Frey and the music video shoot for comedy rap act, Chocolate Mylk and Scrambled Eggz.
In the last month, I have been expanding my interests into new genres, outside of pop and have found myself faced with having to make videos for both metal and rap acts. Honestly, if you know me at all, you would know that I have a very extensive musical history that includes over 10 years of playing in the St. Louis music scenes and almost 5 years working in music retail (you know those stores that you used to go to to BUY music?). So, needless to say, I am very familiar with multiple musical styles and can adapt easily to film any facet, but that doesn't make it any less intimidating when doing it for the first time. The hecticness of filming the Tear Out the Heart video at OZ Nightclub last week was surprisingless balanced by the smoothness of filming Choco Mylk at Gettemeier's Bar last night. The crowd was cooperative (thanks to a 12-3 Cardinals victory in the NLCS) and ready to drink all night and dance to the same song over and over. Where as the usual crowd at The Party at the OZ seemed unwilling to be on camera and just happy to be apart of the happening of the night.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate you showing up, but if you are gonna be at a video shoot... at least do what the director asks you to. Fuck!
Of course both videos have not been edited down yet, so I won't go into detail about their productions... I'll save that for their respective "Behind the Video" blogs (shameless plug). But on the flip side, I did film two simultaneous videos for CeCe Frey on Friday and Saturday for her vocal covers of Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" and Christina Aguilera's "Fighter." I'm like the Peter Jackson of YouTube. CeCe has previously been seen performing with the electro hip hop act Volholla! and has decided to start making her own cover vids. Naturally, I am flattered that she went with me, so let's hope that I can knock two out of the park for her and get that career off to a jump start!
That's it for now, I have a lot to edit and more shit to talk about in upcoming blogs... I've been meaning to finish my thoughts on Teen Wolf, but haven't gotten around to it... maybe tomorrow.
I'm gonna get to talking bout my crazy weekend in a minute, but first things first!
On Monday morning, way fuckin early btw (like 4am), we here at ThePatrickLawrence.com officially released the new Kyle Jordan Mueller cover video for Beyonce's "Love On Top." Some of you may know this as the infamous song that B played at this year's VMAs and rubbed her tummy to proclaim these second coming of Christ (better known as Jay-Z's baby). Let me step away from Kyle for a second and just say... Is this birth gonna be as fucking huge as I think it is?
I mean, we've got two of the world's most talented musicians, and they are going to combine their DNA into one offspring of potential super-talent. Jayden and Willow Smith better be cashing in that 15 minutes of theirs because Shawn Carter Jr. is gonna be putting them out of buisness the moment it opens its eyes. And the upcoming press bonanza that will be covering its entrance to the world will put Suri Cruise's to shame and probably land on the cover of every supermarket tabloid and silk screened bootleg t-shirts (I would like mine on a hoodie). Of course, I wish Beyonce and Jay-Z the best of luck with their new careers in parenthood, just keeps the hits coming, so I can make more videos that exploit their popularity.
Speaking of, in less than 48 hours, Kyle's new drum cover has hit 2,7XX plays and rising. It has a lot of competition though, with our past 2 videos totalling over 200,000 plays worldwide. With the song itself released as a single earlier last month, we were hoping that it would achieve a "Super Bass"-like status in the viral universe, but it has since been bouncing back and forth on the charts... SO Columbia Records, I ask you now... stick to your guns and promote the fuck out of this song, so Kyle and myself can be drinking Amaretto Sours on Malibu Beach in a few months, laughing about recording videos in basements and wondering what time The Roots will be showing up to record a new cover video Kyle's own personal studio.
At 10:01 am on 10//01//11... the NEW OPTION//CONTROL Music Video for "Falling Star" debuted online!
Earlier this year, I set out with a goal to make a sexy video, for an even sexier band. I wasn't sure where this orgasmic video would end up taking me, but I knew I had to do it. It had been the culmination of many years trying to become an amateur filmmaker that ultimately always fell flat on its face. On the verge of graduating college and finally owning my own professional camera equipment, I knew that the time had come and that the band I needed was OPTION//CONTROL. When I made "Saw Her There" with OPTION//CONTROL back in February, needless to say it was an eye opening learning experience. Since then, I have seen business pick up faster and faster (especially after I got my shit together and went completely HD) and I couldn't be more thankful for all the opportunities presented to me.
So fast forward to this past July... enough time had passed and it became clear to everyone involved with "Saw Here There" that it was time to make a new video. We set some very strict guidelines this time around (no people, less performance, more band) and began hammering out a storyline that at one point involved a CGI Craig Hamilton on a shooting star. The band settled on the track "Falling Star," which was co written by local St. Louis producer, Jimmy Hargrove. A more dramatic departure from our previous video, we all knew that the entire look and feel had to be less orgy and more emo... but totally NOT emo, if you know what I mean. We settled on filming in Clayton, MO instead of Downtown St. Louis, since we wanted the location to have a non-geographic landscape (nothing that would give it away).
On Sunday, August 28th, 2011, principal photography began for "Falling Star" on what would become a 3 day shoot. I knew I couldn't pull this off by myself, so I invited my good friend Ashley Alcamo to help A.D. the shoot. Ashley and myself had previously worked together on University of Missouri - St. Louis' Spring 2011 production of the Vagina Monologues ("Any One of Us"). The biggest chunk of filming took place on the first day, which included hauling an upright piano through the streets and back alleys of Clayton (a la Bruno Mars) and having a performance on rooftop... with no permission. Let me take this opportunity to tell you that I like to play dangerous... and having an entire band play the same song over and over for 3 hours in the middle of a small city, with no permit, was as thrilling as it gets. It was like we were all bad children, waiting to see when our parents were finally gonna catch us... But no one did. At one point, someone with a name badge strolled through the set and didn't say anything. We thought for sure that we had been busted, but when 45 minutes had passed and no one had come to stop us, we chalked it up to the guy was probably just looking for a place to hit a joint.
At the end of the first night, we knew we had a winner and in my opinion, I think we could have just done the whole video with the amazing performance footage we got on rooftop. But, we moved on to Day 2 at the Vino Nadoz Wine Bar in Richmond Heights, MO. Even though we decided early on that there were to be NO PEOPLE in the video for "Falling Star," we felt that we needed an atmosphere to place the band in, one that was more fitting of how they normally spend their nights. So we invited a smaller amoun of people (who WANTED to be on camera, this is key) to come out to the wine bar and just hang out. We had a great turn out and everyone had a blastky, getting drunk and just hanging out with the band and crew. Even my other video darling Kyle Jordan Mueller came out and kept my fiancee entertained during the filming. Probably the ease and fun about filming this scene for the extras was that no one was being asked to make out and wear underwear the whole time... which, there's nothing wrong with that of course.
Day 3 saw us on another rooftop, this time in the Central West End of St. Louis. The sundeck of this penthouse apartment served as the dusk and dawn shots that you see in the pre-chorus and finale of the video. The crazy coincidence of this scene (which needs to be shared cause its so fucking cool), is that the sun going down over the city, is actually Clayton, MO - where we had been filming the previous two day. Of course leave it up to the universal and spiritual guru of OPTION//CONTROL, Matthew David Brown to realize the coincidence as it occured. From there we headed over to Washington University, where we filmed the final few shots of the video that ultimately all fell on the cutting room floor... of my basement, as it were.
So where do we go from here? OPTION//CONTROL is making some crazy strides this fall and have picked up a few key shows that can help catapult them out of the local St. Louis scene. I couldn't be more proud of them, for they are more like family to me every time we get together. As long as the response from "Falling Star" is as good or better than "Saw Her There" was, I would expect to see us have another go around on the small screen.
