6.8.13 TEAR OUT THE HEART "Coffin Eyes" Live Music Video
As mentioned yesterday, news of Vice Vega's cover version of "Call Me Maybe" on iPads is spreading fast and bringing the band a whole new level of attention. Last week, they decided to give the Perez Hilton "Can You Sing?" contest one more go and reimagined Rihanna's newest hit track, "Where Have You Been."
We had a lil bit more time on our hands this time around, compared to the few days we had making the last video for the contest. But regardless, concepts were few and far between, and we knew that living up to the hype of the last video was going to be a battle (Imagine Christopher Nolan coming up with a movie to follow "The Dark Knight," only no time or money to think about it).
Keeping with the storyline of Vice Vega's "Suburb Sessions," we decided to film in the basement of the house which has been the backdrop of all of our recent cover videos. Unfortunately, it had much to be desired and the stark gray concrete was just too little to work with. I reached into my bag of tricks (or my plastic Rubbermaid tub) and pulled out an army of backdrop cloths, the same ones used on Kyle Jordan Mueller's version of "Marry The Night," and went to town decorating the bland basement.
We created a quick skrim out of a plain white sheet and a couple of mic stands and then backlit it to give the harsh sillouhette you see in the video. On the spot we decided to play around with the idea of black and white, splitting the band into two section and giving them their own designated Yin and Yang.
Everything was rolling along smoothly until my CF card malfunctioned after an hour of shooting some of my best footage ever. We luckily had a back up card, but the footage was lost for good and after an already frustrating afternoon, we were forced to spend and extra hour reshooting everything.
Regardless, the video came out exactly how I had envisioned it (on the spot, mind you) and I am pleased to bring it to you today.
In just 3 weeks, news of Vice Vega's phenomenal iPad cover of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" has been spreading like wildfire.
First the band made the front page of PerezHilton.com and now they have been spotlighted on Discchord.com, a website specializing in music apps for the iPad.
The band is releasing their newest video today, "Where Have You Been" by Rihanna (directed by ME) and will hope to get a slew of views off of the success of the iPad cover.

After cramming together a video and concept in less than 72 hours, we made the deadline of Perez Hilton's "Can You Sing?" contest and ACTUALLY made the Top 5!!
Let's put that into perspective... thousands, and I MEAN THOUSANDS of people across the world submitted their versions of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" to PerezHilton.com and we actually made it in the top 5 honorable mentions!
Not to mention, the band got to grace the front of the site and gained 3,000+ views in only two hours.
This topped off an amazing and successful week for me, which included the announcement of the official premiere of my short film, "The Stakes." Thanks to everyone who visits this site, watches the videos and just generally supports me and my art.
These dudes call me last Monday night. They say "Hey, Perez Hilton is having a contest for this song 'Call Me Maybe' and it's due on June 3rd!"
It may not be the 48 Hour Film Project, but it was definitely gonna be a crunch, especially since the band hadn't even created their own version of Carly Rae Jepsen's monster hit track yet. Regardless, I accepted the challenge and two days later we were hard at work on a new cover video for Vice Vega.
Taking my suggestion to give the video some kind of gimmick to make it stand out in the contest, lead vocalist, Steve Neske, decided to record the enitre song on Apple's GarageBand for iPad and then perform the song as well on the tablet. Despite filming all four members of the band in separate locations, we still had four individual iPads for them to play on, mainly because we didn't decide til the last second that they would not be performing together.
The video was submitted on Monday morning, just barely making the deadline for submissions on PerezHilton.com, if anything comes of it, you will here it FIRST here.
